Poetry Reading = Fun? At Branded Saloon, Yes!

(I'm sending a post for the Branded blog below, at Gerard's suggestion - headline is the subject line, text is below)

On April 1, 2011, I started writing one poem a day.  This was meant to be a month-long project, to celebrate April, which is National Poetry Month (as I'm sure you already knew!).  I found that the daily task of writing a poem was a worthwhile and engaging one, and so when April ended and May began, I decided to keep going.

The months passed and the poems continued.  Some were good; some were terrible; but the point is, I kept writing them.  As the end of March 2012 - my one-year mark - approached, I knew that I would want to celebrate by reading some of the not-so-bad ones allowed to friends, lovers, acquaintances, and random neighborhood folks.  As a current Prospect Heights resident, I'd previously attended a few music shows (or "gigs") in the back room at Branded Saloon.  I'd liked what I'd seen - the vibes, the wings - and so I asked management if I could read my stuff in their space to celebrate my one-year mark, and they readily agreed.

As for the actual night of the reading...well, what can I say?  It was a seismic and important evening for yours truly.  About 25-30 of my besties arranged themselves in seats, banquets, and stools, and sipped cold brew, and ate Frito pie, while I stood up in front of them and relayed the story of my year.  My poems are often not really "poems," per se, by which I mean they are narrative, audience-friendly, usually pretty humorous, and often quite lusty (what can I say, it was a desire-filled year).  Branded provided an idyllic backdrop - casual, comfortable - for me to share my work with those whom I love (and some strangers who stumbled in, too).

Afterwards we all got good and drunk.  On Sunday I woke up smiling, and in truth, it is now 8 days later, and I am still smiling, and still writing more poems...

Thank you Branded Saloon!

RE: Baby Shower for Rachel and "Schmoogli" Grossman

I agree! It was great – exactly the relaxed, comfortable atmosphere with good food and good vibes that we were looking for. Gerard and all the staff were a pleasure to work with. I highly recommend Branded Saloon! Rachel Grossman

Subject: Baby Shower for Rachel and "Schmoogli" Grossman

On December 3rd we held a baby shower for my daughter and my soon to arrive grandson. We had no idea about how it would turn out but it was close to my daughter's home and they had a private room that we could have to ourselves. We arranged all this with Gerard who owns Branded Saloon. What we did not know at the time was how wonderful he would be in making the party such a success. And we never imagined how good the food could be. The food was extraordinary and so plentiful. We had it come out in "waves" which kept everyone looking forward to the next mouth-watering creation. Gerard did everything to make our event warm and friendly and successful. As a result everyone wants to go eat at Branded again so they can have another portion, all to themselves I might ad, of their favorite dish. Many thanks to Gerard and Branded Saloon. Success: MOB photo shoot at Branded Saloon!

Memories Out of the Box is just 4 yo! Our website launched 3 years ago www.memoriesoutofthebox.biz with photos that I had taken of the photobooks/scrapbooks

that I have created for my clients over the years. MOB can help create many types of display products but my clients have preferred your good old fashion style scrapbook. Like the one you may have inherited from your grandparents! But finally after being told one too many times that I needed better pictures of my artwork I hired my friend & professional photographer Tracy Young of TracyYoungphotography.com & Gerard K of Branded generously allowed us to use the back room for our shoot! 10 of my clients with 15 of their books came to share their stories & time. MOB will now have some great images & memories! A business is like a child: it takes a lot of time & care to grow. Branded Saloon is a wonderful addition to my neighborhood with some of the nicest people too. Thanks Gerard & PJ & Z for helping me tell my story! P.S. I’ll share some pix when I can:)
